He joined the Department of Biochemistry, NEHU as a faculty in 2002. He did his post-doctoral research in the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA (2009-2010). Dr. Kma was also awarded the BOYSCAST Fellowship, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, to undertake research in Florida International University, Miami, USA.
Dr. Kma has been teaching M. Sc. Biochemistry theory papers and conducting practical classes for more than 14 years. He has also been teaching the Pre-Ph.D. courses since its introduction in NEHU. Dr. Kma has also been involved in examination related matters for Under-graduate, Post-graduate and Pre-Ph.D. courses since 2002. He is actively involved in research in the field of cancer and radiation countermeasures for more than 12 years and. One of the research focus of his is on early detection of cancer and has contributed immensely in making poly-ADP-ribosylation of blood lymphocyte proteins as a reliable marker of initiation of cancer in mouse model, which has been tested in human blood lymphocytes as well. Other field of research interest includes chemical radioprotectors that can be used in radiation countermeasure strategy. Currently, Dr. Kma is also focusing on research involving natural products. He is working on using herbal products in radiation countermeasure strategy; and in radiosensitization of cancer cells and as anticancer agents. Dr. Kma has more than 30 publications which include papers in National and International journals, book chapters and edited books. His research has been funded by ICMR, UGC, BRNS-DAE & SERB-DST. He has also guided Ph. D. students. Dr. Kma has applied for one Indian patent along with other investigators. He is also life members of several professional bodies. He has presented his research work in several National and International conferences/seminars in India and abroad.
Dr. L. Kma has actively contributed to corporate life and management of the Institution. He has been Teacher-in-charge of various administrative and academic committees of the Department of Biochemistry and the University in general since 2002. Dr. Kma is also the Radiation Safety Officer of the University since 2015. He has been part of the Organising Committee of several seminars/conferences/symposia in the Department, School and University which includes the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and 96th Indian Science Congress. Dr. Kma has also participated and organized several professional development activities. He is also very interested in extension programmes and co-curricular activities. He has been the Programme Co-ordinator, National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, NEHU (2013-2016) and currently continuing for another term (2016-2019). He has participated in several games and sports events organized in the University and has represented NEHU in such events. Dr. Kma has contributed several articles in local newspaper on topics of general interest. He has been the General Secretary, Vice-President and Executive Committee Member of North-Eastern Hill University Teacher’s Association (NEHUTA) on different occasions.
