The North-Eastern Hill University Act (24 of 1973) passed by both Houses of Parliament received the assent of the President of India on May 26th, 1973. It was published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) on May 26th, 1973 together with the First Schedule of the Act incorporating the Statutes of the University.
The objectives of the University, as laid down in the act, are "to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the North-eastern region, and in particular, the intellectual, academic and cultural advancement".
NEHU is an institution with proven academic excellence of higher learning and research, social commitment and cultural interest with a clear vision for its future growth. At present the sanctioned faculty strength is 406. Its student community is drawn not only from different parts of North-East India but also from other regions of the country and abroad.
In a short span of about 50 years NEHU has matured into an institution with a serious academic and social and cultural agenda and a clear vision for its future growth.
School of Education comprises of various departments and centres i.e. Department of education, Shillong, Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Department of Education, Tura Campus, Centre for Distance Education.
Department of Education was started North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong was established in the year 1976. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program was initiated in the year 1981 and continued till 1983. The M.Ed. Program was restarted by the University in the year 2007 and is successfully running till date. The intake of the M.Ed. program is 1 unit i.e. 50. Parallelly the department of Education is also running MA Education Program with intake of 50 students.
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is an initiative introduced to reform teacher education in the country by Ministry of Education, Government of India which is also one of the major mandates of the NEP-2020. North-Eastern Hill University received a letter of Intent (LoI) dated 3rd October 2023 for grant of permission for offering ITEP under 7(13) of NCTE Regulation, 2014 to start B.Sc. B.Ed. (Secondary) and B.A. B.Ed. (Secondary). Accordingly, NEHU is going to start the ITEP and this program will function under Department of Education, NEHU, Shillong from the academic session 2024-2025. This program is a dual-major holistic Bachelor’s Degree in Education as well as specialised subjects such as language, social sciences, sciences and mathematics etc.
