BioNEST Bioincubator Facility, NEHU, Tura Campus in association with College of Community Science (CCS), Tura conducted a two-days training program during December 09 & 10, 2021 on Food Processing, Handicrafts and Clothing for the Rural Women Entrepreneurs of West Garo Hills. Entrepreneurs from different parts of Garo Hills participated in this training program. On the first day of training, Dr Ch Basanti Devi, Assistant Professor, Department of Food and Nutrition had demonstrated the preparation of Pumpkin Cake and Pumpkin jam. The participants subsequently prepared the cake and jam on their own. Dr Basanti also briefed the entrepreneurs about the prospects of food processing as startup. In this program, Mr. Madrass Dkhar, District Development Manager of West Garo Hills District, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Mr. Apurba Saha, Lead Bank Manager, West Garo Hills interacted with the participants, discussed about the prospective virgin market of food processing in north eastern states of India and encouraged the entrepreneurs to avail the various Banking Schemes to launch and expand their own Startups.
On the next day, December 10, 2021 hands-on training program on Jute based Handicraft was conducted in guidance of Dr Anupama Mishra, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Textiles and Apparel Designing, CCS, Tura. Dr Mishra familiarized the entrepreneurs about different types of jute fibres, their uses as raw material for handicrafts, the economic benefits. Dr Mishra also showcased various traditional and utility handicraft items that can be made from Jute and other natural blended fibres and informed the participants about the ever-increasing market demand of handicrafts. In the next session, the trainees were demonstrated on jute handicraft making and they themselves prepared items of their own choice using supplied Jute fibres. Participants showcasing their creative best prepared cup coasters, mobile bags, slippers, wall hangings, baskets etc. The program ended with a valedictory session where all the participants are felicitated with certificates in presence of Dr BK Mishra, Project Investigator, BioNEST Bioincubator Facility, NEHU, Tura Campus; Dr Suman K Nandy, CEO, BioNEST Bioincubator Facility, NEHU, Tura Campus and Dr Namita Singh, Dean I/C, College of Community Science, Tura. The trainees requested for more programs like this in Pickle and Soft Toys preparation and the organizers were happily agreed to meet the need in very near future. The participants are enthusiastic about taking the knowledge forward by practicing it in their daily life to make a living out of it.
