International Seminar cum workshop on the "Economic and Social Impact of Medical Devices on the Healthcare Sector in the Country" organised

North-Eastern Hill University Shillong organized the International Seminar cum workshop on the “Economic and Social Impact of Medical Devices on the Healthcare Sector in the Country” in blended mode from 28th to 30th April, 2022.  TheInaugural program was organized on 28th April, 2022 in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, NEHU, Shillong. The event is organised by the Design Innovation Centre (DIC) and Department of Biomedical Engineering, NEHU, Shillong in collaboration and sponsored by ICSSR NERC NEHU and DIC.

The sub-theme of the event focusses on the Growth of Medical Devices in India - Towards Atma Nirbhar Bharat.  The program is being held to bring forth experts from academia, industry, healthcare institutions, government agencies, medical experts, venture capitalists to deliberate the vision and develop the medical technology sector in the North East and India.

Dr. Dinesh Bhatia, the program coordinator welcomed the dignitaries and apprised regarding the objective of the proposed International Seminar cum Workshop. He stressed upon the involvement of health experts from NEIGHRIMS, NEIAH, CMC, Vellore who would be deliberating during the three days event. Well known experts from IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, AMTZ, Visakhapatnam, IIT, Madras, and PRIME Hub, Government of Meghalayahave been invited to help interns learn about Innovation, Entrepreneurship and modern business practices.Industry experts from India and abroad such as Australia and Canada shall join the session virtually during the Seminar to share their experience with the participants. Local entrepreneurs within state and across would be deliberating during the event.

Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong and Chief Guest for the event spoke on the importance of Innovations, development of new technologies in collaboration with the other institutes in the region and the country.  He emphasized on conducting such events on a regular basis so that stakeholders can be appropriately benefitted.

Professor Donkupar Syiem, Director, DIC emphasised the role of Design Innovation Centre in the University and what roadmap has been planned so that knowledge can be shared and passed on from the experienced persons to theenthusiastic younger generation so that they may develop innovative low cost technologies which could benefit the society.

Prof. C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent of NEIGHRIMS, Shillong, spoke about the developments in the field of medical technology from past to present era. He emphasized the present roadmap and challenges which lie ahead in the development of medical technology in the country and how the medical experts are fully dependent on the medical equipments for their daily diagnosis.

Professor M. Manivannan, IIT, Madras emphasized on the new technologies in the country and worldwide with their augmentation for the benefits of patient care.  He stressed upon on 3D printing designing and how it could benefit the healthcare sector in the long run.

Professor Neeta Mahesekar, NEIAH stressed upon the ancient traditional knowledge in the country from the days of Srustha and how they are shaping the present healthcare equipments. She emphasized on role of NEIAH in the region and potential collaborations with all stakeholders. She supported the present advancements in the biomedical field by supporting the available traditional therapies for the betterment of the society.

Dr.Punit Gautam, Joint Coordinator, gave the vote of thanks and conveyed his sincere gratitude to all stakeholders within and outside the University to make the event a grand success. He profusely thanked the University administration, press and media and other agencies for supporting successful organization of the event.
