The Department of Botany hosted the 12th DST-ACS Effective Manuscript Writing Workshop on May 30th, 2022, on the scenic campus of North-Eastern Hill University. The event was graced by the august presence of Prof. S.B. Prasad, officiating Vice-Chancellor, NEHU and Dean, School of Life Sciences; Prof. Highland Kayang, Head, Department of Botany; Prof. T.S. Basu Paul, Head., Department of Chemistry and esteemed Scientists and EAB (European Association for Biometrics) Members. The programme had a healthy participation of around 300 research scholars, postdoctoral fellows, young faculties and postgraduate students. The participants were from Universities and colleges from different North-Eastern states. The programme gave a strategic roadmap towards effective manuscript writing and publications to the participants.
The session was kickstarted by Prof. Ayan Dutta, EAB member, The journal of physical Chemistry, IACS. Prof. Dutta made an intriguing presentation discussing about the intricacy on several aspects of manuscript writing such as the significance of simple and creative writing of the manuscript, its title and the data presentation. His lucid illustration on paper writing with context to movie posters and ghazals captured the participant’s attention throughout the lecture. Prof. Kaushik Chatterjee, EAB member, ACS Applied Biomaterials, Biomacromolecules took forward the program and gave a detailed insight in effective manuscript formulation. His talk highlighted on the key steps in composing a scientifically effective paper. He also discussed about the core components of the abstract that would accentuate one’s manuscript. Moreover, the sessions were made engaging by introducing activities for the participants after every talk by Dr. Ajay Jha and Dr. Krishna Chaturvedi from ACS member. Besides manuscript writing, they also discussed and enlightened the participants about critical step that entails publication such as plagiarism check, selection of the right journal, writing an effective cover letter, the peer review process and the likes. The attendees were also introduced to various products and services available to them at ACS.
Dr. B.K. Tyagi, Advisor, AWSAR, DST-Vigyan Prasar introduced the concept of AWSAR programme organised by the Department of Science and Technology to the participants. The programme aims to disseminate Indian research stories among the common masses. Dr. Tyagi motivated the PhD Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) in Science and Technology (S&T) streams to participate in the national competition by writing their scientific work in an easy and interesting format that would be intelligible to a common man.
During the closing session, Prof. Prasad thanked DST and ACS for organizing this workshop, reminiscing his own time as a scholar when he did not have access to such an event for guidance and remarked that this event can become a Pan-University event with the potential to involve participants from all the Eight states of the Indian North East. The participants also gave positive feedback acknowledging the grand success of the program that has helped them in shaping their outlook towards scientific communication.
