Observance of World Tourism Day by NEHU Yuva Tourism Club

The World Tourism Day is observed worldwide on 27th September every year. The NEHU Yuva Tourism Club in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, North-Eastern Hill University, and India Tourism, Shillong, has organized a series of events such as Photography, Best Out of the Waste Exhibition cum Competition, Green Tourism Walk, Indigenous Food Court, and Tourism Quiz, to reveal World Tourism Day on September 27, 2023. All the competitions revolved around the theme of World Tourism Day 2023, i.e. ‘Tourism and Green Investments’. The celebration started by organizing a Green Tourism Walk inside the campus to sensitize NEHU community about the importance of Tourism, the environment, and sustainability. The formal inaugural session of the event was graced by Prof. D.K. Nayak, Vice-Chancellor (In-charge), Prof A.P. Pati (Dean SEMIS), Prof. Saurabh Kumar Dixit, Chairman, NEHU Yuva Tourism Club, Dr. Benjamin F. Lyngdoh, and Dr. Sharad Kumar Kulshrestha from Department of Tourism & Hotel Management. The inaugural programme commenced with a welcome address from the Chairman, NEHU Yuva Tourism Club. The event was also attended by Faculty represntatatives of NEHU Yuva Tourism Club namely Prof. S. K. De, Prof. Rekha M Shangpliang, Dr. Saralin Lyngdoh, Dr. Barika Khyriem, and Dr. J. Thabah. The student representatives from departments of the university also taken part in different events.      Resource Persons highlighted the significance of preserving the environment with sustainable practices. Also, they stressed upon the adverse impact on our mother earth due to global warming and climate change. In line with this year theme- ‘Tourism and Green Investments’, they deliberate on the need to focus attention on every human aspect towards promoting and preserving green aspects of the environment. Furthermore, they also emphasised to consider the environment as the main stakeholder in all human endeavors. The program ended with a vote of thanks from Dr. Sharad Kumar Kulshrestha, convenor, NEHU, Yuva Tourism Club.

The Tourism Quiz, Photography, and Best Out of the Waste Competitions were followed after the inaugural session, where there was active participation from students belonging to different departments. The team of Department of Sociology (Ms. Anindita Das and Lhungjamang Baite) and Department of Zoology (Mr. Abhinab Sarma and Mr. Aiboklang Nongrum) were declared winner and runner up in the Tourism Quiz Competition. Ester S. Kayina (Department of History) and Ms. Gennesaret A. B. Kharkongor (Department of Law) were declared winner and runner up in the Best Out of the Waste Competition. Mr. H. Arundeep Singha (Department of Environment Studies) and Ms. Gennesaret A. B. Kharkongor (Department of Law) were declared winner and runner up in the Photography Competition. Ms. Ningombam Babina Devi from Department of Tourism & Hotel Management is awarded as Best Placard maker for Green Tourism Walk. The Indigenous Food Court presented the authentic delicacies of North–Eastern India, prepared by students of different Departments of NEHU specially Department of Sociology, Linguistics, Library and Information Sciences, Tourism and Hotel Management etc. The NEHU Yuva Tourism Club, therefore, instigates to gear up institutions, organizations, the government, the local community, and other stakeholders to come closer to ensure inclusive growth through tourism. The programs culminate and intrigue participants about the crucial aspects of preserving the environment for a better tomorrow.
