NEHU Hosts 5-Day Awareness Drive on Blood Cancer and Stem Cell in Collaboration with DKMS Foundation India

From 21st to 25th April 2025, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), in collaboration with DKMS Foundation India and the NEHU Health Center, organized a comprehensive five-day awareness campaign focused on blood cancer and stem cell donor registration.

The sessions were led by members from DKMS and were strongly supported by Dr. Carline Mukhim, Chief Medical Officer of NEHU, and Welkin Stone Shadap, Student Coordinator. Their efforts were further strengthened by enthusiastic student volunteers who played a key role in outreach and mobilization.

The campaign aimed to educate students about the urgent need for stem cell donors, especially in the context of blood cancers—where one person is diagnosed every five minutes. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of registering donors from ethnically diverse backgrounds, which is crucial to improving the chances of finding a life-saving match for patients across the globe.

The awareness sessions were conducted classroom-to-classroom, covering almost all departments within the university. The initiative witnessed active participation from the student community and successfully resulted in the registration of 344 potential stem cell donors, many from underrepresented communities such as the Garo and Khasi groups.

This meaningful collaboration between NEHU and DKMS not only reflects the university’s commitment to social impact and health advocacy but also marks a significant step forward in contributing to the global fight against blood cancer.
