Celebration of 5th International Yoga Day 2019

Celebration of IDY on June 21, 2019: 5th International Yoga Day was held on 21st June, 2019 at Multi-use Convention Hall, NEHU, Shillong from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. The Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Prof. S.K. Srivastava was the Chief Guest of the celebration and Shri Umesh Chandgothia, Patanjali Yoga Kendra, Shillong, was the Guest of Honour. Prof. G. Singaiah, Pro- Vice-Chancellor (Tura campus, NEHU) and Dr. J. N. Nayak, The Registrar, NEHU were also present.

Prof. Anil. D. Sahasrabudhe, the Chairmen, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) was one of the dignitaries who attended the program and also addressed the participants of the programme.

A group of Yoga Teachers from the Art of Living, Shillong Kendra in the leadership of Ms. Mala Sinha were also present in the programme.

The programme started with the felicitation of the dignitaries, followed by the lighting of the lamp by The Chief Guest, Guest of honour and other dignitaries.  Prof. M. P. Pandey, the Chairman of University Level Yoga Committee gave his welcome address. Shri Umesh Chandgothia, Patanjali Yoga Kendra, Shillong addressed the participants and briefed about the benefit of the yoga. Prof. Rout, Department of Law, NEHU demonstrated Shirshashan.

The members of Art of Living, Shillong Kendra conducted Yoga protocol session as per Yoga Protocol issued by Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India followed by pledge. The Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Prof. S.K. Srivastava spoke about the importance of yoga to improve human health and detailed about the ways and means by which one can incorporate yoga in his day-to-day life

About 200 participants actively attended the programme which includes students, teaching and non-teaching staff and their family members. The program was also attended by the participants of the AICTE Faculty Leadership program including few guests from United Kingdom.   In spite of the final ongoing End Semester Examination of the university, a large number of students and faculty members participated in the programme. An exhibition of the posters was also organized at the venue in which different Asanas, Pranayams were displayed on the benefits of the yoga. Along with this, the posters of Yoga protocol issued by Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India were also exhibited at the venue. T-shirts printed with the logo of International Yoga Day and fruits were distributed to all the participants present there.

The programme ended with Vote of Thanks by Prof. Bela Keshan, a member of the University level Yoga Committee followed by National Anthem.
