Regional Training Programme on Plagiarism Detection Software URKUND

A “One-Day North-East Regional Training Programme for Administrators of Plagiarism Detection Software (PDS) URKUND” was held on 23rd August 2019 at the Multi-Use Convention Hall, NEHU Campus, Shillong from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The programme was jointly organized by Central Library, NEHU, Shillong and INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The training programme was the outcome of the urgent need to sensitise URKUND Administrators and Users alike on the implementation of PDS-URKUND in higher education setup including those in the North-Eastern Region of the country.

The Inaugural Session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. J.N. Nayak, Registrar, NEHU, Shillong who extended a warm welcome to the resource persons and all the 159 participants from different institutions of higher and technical education of the region. Shri. Manoj Kumar K, Scientist-E, INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar presented a brief outline of the programme with particular emphasis on the ethical dimensions of plagiarism in research and publication. Prof. H. Lamin, Pro Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong, while presenting the inaugural address, spoke about the changing academic scenario wherein technology has made tremendous impact on the quality of scholarly information generation and dissemination. He also stressed upon the need to maintain originality in research including publications which is one aspect of research ethics. The Inaugural Session concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. F.R. Sumer, Librarian In-Charge, NEHU, Shillong.

The Technical Session, which followed the recess for high tea, started with a very interactive presentation on “Introduction to Ethics and Plagiarism” by Shri. Manoj Kumar K, Scientist-E, INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar. Shri Manoj Kumar K spoke at length about ethics in scholarly writing, with emphasis on the pitfalls and consequences of plagiarism in the present-day scholarly environment. The presentation also witnessed a lively interaction between the resource person and the participants who sought clarification on relevant issues relating to the implementation and administration of URKUND. The tutorial presentation on “Training on the Use of URKUND for Admins and Users” by Mr. Henning Sall, Global Expansion Manager, URKUND (Pro Infocenter AB, Sweden) highlighted the enhanced features of URKUND. The presentation drew much attention, particularly from among the participant URKUND Administrators. Suggestions to incorporate specific and enhanced features in URKUND as expressed by the existing Administrators were also promptly noted by the resource person.  Shri Prakash Sarda, Director, eGalactic, Pune also interacted with the participants on issues relating to subscription, implementation and software support for URKUND.

The highlight of the training programme was the exhaustive presentation on various aspects of URKUND and all the participants collectively commended the joint organizers and the URKUND corporate team for the highly informative presentations. The programme concluded with the presentation of mementos to the resource persons and certificates of participation to the participants.
