IPR Cell

NEHU was established in the year 2022 under the Chairmanship of Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong. Dr A.K. Singh, Department of Law, NEHU, Shillong has been appointed as Coordinator of the Cell.

The Cell aims to work for the IPR awareness and help the budding creators to protect their intellectual property rights. It  also aims to encourage the  researchers to take up IPR related issues to further develop the IPR field of study.

Dr A. K. Singh, Coordinator, IPR Cell, NEHU submitted the proposal to the Ministry of MSME on 23-06-2023 to recognize NEHU, Shillong as Host Institute (HI) as it can provide space equipment, laboratory and other supports incubate for nurture the ideas to flourish the business activities. Accordingly, NEHU, Shillong received the recognition as Host Institute (HI) on 30-09-2022 for implementation of the incubation component. Under this MSME new innovative scheme 23 Ideas have been submitted to MSME through the Cell which are under the scrutiny.

Vision of the Cell

The Vision of the Cell is to encourage and nurture the Intelligent Innovation and protection of the new creations. And also, its vision is to promote the entrepreneurship amongst students, teachers as well as non teaching fraternity.

Objectives of the Cell

(a) To enable creators in understanding, identifying and using intellectual property for theadvantage of society, university and creators themselves;
(b) To make awareness among students and employees for creation of intellectual propertyand its protection;
(c) To facilitate in patent filing and help innovators get their IP Rights;
(d) To train and aware the stakeholders of IPR like students, creators, lawyers, etc;
(e) Promoting discussions on IPR awareness

1. Awareness Programme on IPR & MSME Innovative Schemes, 26 April, 2022

The Cell organized IPR Awareness Programme on 26th April 2022 where Prof. H.S.Chawla  former Dean, G.B. Pant University , Pantnagar Uttarakhand and Shri Nilesh Trivedi, Assistant Director, MSME were the keynote speaker.


2. Online workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Patents Filing & Design Filing Requirements, 10 October, 2022

The Cell successfully organized the awareness programme on October 10, 2022 in association with RGNIIPM,Nagpur. Where Mr. HimangshuChandrakar and Dr Nalanda were the resource persons.


3. One day National Seminar on Competition law and Practice, 25 February, 2023

The Cell organised one day National Seminar on 25th February,2023 on “ Competition Law and Practice” in collaboration with Competition Commission of India where Dr Rakesh Kumar ,Member, Competition Commission of India and Dr Anil Kumar,Deputy Director,  Competition Commission of India were the Speakers.


4. Two days National Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights: Emerging Trends and Challenges, 13-14 March, 2023

The Cell organised a two day National Seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights; Emerging Trends and Challenges” on 13-14 March,2023. The Keynote speakers were, .H.S.Chawla  former Dean, G.B. Pant University , Pant nagar Uttarakhand, Dr Rajnish Kumar Singh, Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University(BHU), Dr Digvijay Singh, Faculty of Law, Central University, South  Bihar Gaya , Dr Pankaj Kumar, National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam  and Shri Binod Prasad, Patent Attorney.


5. Extension Lecture on Law and Entrepreneurship, 23 May, 2023

An extension lecture was organised by the IPR Cellon “Law and Entrepreneurship” whereDr. Sudhanshu Jangir, Director Indian Institute of Sustainability, Gujarat University has delivered the lecture.


6. Awareness programme on Intellectual Property Rights; Artificial Intelligence and Copyrights, 12 June, 2023

An awareness programme was organized on Intellectual Property Rights on the topic of contemporary importance “Artificial Intelligence and Copyrights”. The key note speaker of the session was Prof. V. K. Ahuja, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam.


7. Sept, 09, 2023, Online IPR Awareness workshop along with Indian Patent Office, Kolkata and National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM), a mission awareness (to 1 million students) of DPIIT, Govt. of India

An online awareness workshop was organized with the direct experience from the Indian Patent Office, Kolkata, where Prof. Bhagirathi Panda acted as chief guest of the event. Mr Sourabh Trivedi, Founder IP Samadhan, New Delhi delivered one hour presentation on behalf of NIPAM on â??Brief introduction of IPR along with process of fillingâ?, NIPAM is working to reach out 1 million students regarding IPR under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Dr Santanu Acharya, Assistant Controller, Indian Patent Office, Kolkata also one of the speakers delivered a one hour presentation along with an interaction session on â??Patenting system in India and issues while filling patentsâ?. Dr A.K. Singh Coordinator IPR Cell welcomed the speakers participants and Dr M Mahato gave the formal vote of thanks. It was a good interaction session with the resource person, where 111 participants were registered and finally almost 49 participants joined in the online workshop.


8. Sept, 21, 2023, Entrepreneurship Awareness Workshop (EAP) jointly Organized by IPR Cell and MSME, Shillong Branch, Govt of India

The Awareness of Entrepreneurship and the scheme of MSME, Govt of India as well the schemes of Govt of Meghalaya for the existing and prospective entrepreneurs, were highlighted in the programme on Sept 21, 2023. Mr S. Majaw, General Manager, District Commerce & Industries Centre, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, served as Chief guest of the programme. Mr Neeraj Sharma, Asstt. Director (I/c), Br.MSME DFO, Near B. K. Bajoria School, Shillong Branch, Govt of India, delivered a presentation on â??MSME Scheme for Existing Business and Entrepreneursâ?. L. Khongrymmai, Functional Manager, District Commerce & Industries Centre, Near FCI, Govt of Meghalaya, delivered a presentation on â??Govt of Meghalaya Scheme for Existing and Prospective Entrepreneurâ?. K. Nongkynrih, SIDBI Development Executive, Small Industrial Development Bank of India (SIDBI), Govt of India, Dhankheti, Shillong, delivered a presentation on â??Business Financing through SIDBIâ?. The programme was organized in hybrid mode at the auditorium as well as conference hall of U Kiang Nongbah Guest House (Old Guest House), NEHU, Shillong, where 112 participants were registered and around 70 participants joined physically and online mode. Dr A.K.Singh,Coordinator IPR Cell NEHU, welcomed the guests as wellas participants and Dr M Mahato gave the formal vote of thanks.
