As per the mandate of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, and guidelines of NEP 2020, the School of Technology (SOT), Universal Human Value (UHV) Cell recently organized a Student Induction Programme (SIP) on 13th August 2024 at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. The SIP event is held to welcome and expose the newly admitted students of B. Tech and M. Tech Programs to various aspects of day-to-day life and to equip them with essential tools and information for a successful start at the time of their entry into the higher education system at NEHU. It will be a 2-week long activity in the duration of 13 August 2024 to 24 August 2024 as a part of the curricula of their B. Tech. and M. Tech Programs for the School of Technology-Centred Departments, including the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Information Technology, Architectural and the Department of Nanotechnology.
The SIP was organized to expose the new students through day-wise interactive lectures and activity-oriented technical sessions, about the AICTE prescribed vital components, namely, (i) Physical activity, (ii) Creative Arts, (iii) Universal Human Values, (iv) Literary, (v) Proficiency Modules, (Vii) Entrepreneurship and Business Modules, (viii) Lectures by Eminent People, (ix) Visits to Local Areas, (x) Familiarization to Local Languages and Dept./Branch & Innovations.
The inauguration ceremony on 13th August 2024 of the two-week-long SIP was graced by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, accompanied by the Dean, SOT, Prof. Md. I. Hussain. The event of the SIP started with the welcome address delivered by Dr. Sudip Paul, Co-ordinator of the SIP event and the university Co-coordinator of UHV- Cell, where he drew the attention of the inductee 1st Semester students of B. Tech, M. Tech and B.Arch to the goals and benefits of this SIP event. He said when new students enter an institution with an unfamiliar environment, they also come with diverse thoughts and backgrounds, therefore, this SIP is very important to make them aware of all generalized rules and regulations of the university and prepare them for their new role in coming years during their degree.
In continuation, the Dean, SOT, appreciated the UHV cell and SIP co-ordinator for their efforts to organize the SIP event. He caught the attention of the students to the various facilities available in the university to help the students feel comfortable in a new environment. He said that the SIP is designed to help in the whole process, and as something more than the mere orientation program. He also encouraged them to build bonds with other students and faculty members to grow better and achieve their goals in the field of technology. He also sensitized them from the expectations of the university about their behaviors in the university environment and especially in the School of Technology (SOT) while newly coming from a school education background. He also emphasized maintaining a Tobacco-free environment on the university campus and SOT premises.
The Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Prof. P.S. Shukla, in his address to the students, focused on making the best utilization of the opportunities available in the university through the facilities about academics, sports, the physical as well as the advanced e-library system, extra-curricular activities, entrepreneurship skills, and innovation activities, including the possibilities to explore for start-up explorations. He also expressed his enthusiasm and enlightened the students about the teacher-student relationship as the recently adopted practice in the university, which may be utilized by the students to freely share their problems with the faculty-mentors allotted to them. He also praised the Dean SOT, Co-ordinator of SIP, and UHV cell members for enlightening the students through all the best pieces of information via various modules of this program. The responses of the student-inductees were collected through their pre-survey feedback in the formats prescribed by AICTE, once before the start of the SIP event.
Dr. Shruti Shukla, a member of the UHV cell, delivered the vote of thanks in the inaugural ceremony of the SIP to the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, Dean SOT, and Co-ordinators of the SIP along with UHV cell members including all concerned offices of NEHU, AICTE, various resource persons, HODs of the SOT, and the student-inductees, the real beneficiaries of the two-week-long SIP.
