The IEEE CS SYP High Impact Zonal Event 2024, titled "NextGen Nexus" hosted at NEHU

The IEEE CS SYP High Impact Zonal Event 2024, titled “NextGen Nexus,” was hosted by the IEEE Student Branch at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong—a Central University in India—from October 3rd to 4th, 2024. The theme of this year's event was Artificial Intelligence for better tomorrow, and it was held at the Multi-Use Convention Hall of NEHU, Shillong. A total of 242 participants registered for the event, out of which 194 attended. Attendees included students and professionals not only from NEHU but also from various institutes across the North-Eastern region of India.

The program was inaugurated on October 3rd, 2024, by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of NEHU Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla. The Dean of the School of TechnologyProf. Md. Iftekhar Hussain and the Head of the Department of Information TechnologyProf. Debdatta Kandar were present as the Guest of Honour and Special Guest, respectively, during the inaugural session. The organizing chairs for the event were Dr. Arnab Kumar Maji, Associate Professor in the Department of Information Technology and Counselor of the IEEE Student Branch, and Lincolin Amory Ranee, a Ph.D. Scholar in the IT Department at NEHU and Chair of the IEEE Student Branch.

The event featured eight esteemed speakers—four from industry and four from academia. The sessions held on 03/10/2024 and 04/10/2024 are outlined day-wise as follows:

03/10/2024           

  1. The first lecture was delivered by Mr. Shivam Shivam, Engineering Lead at ZS Associates India Pvt. Ltd. and Advisor for the IEEE CS SYP Program. He spoke on the theme of "Green Computing," highlighting its importance and exploring various solutions and applications in the field.
  2. The second talk was given by Mr. Sandeep Varma, Principal (Partner) at ZS Associates India Pvt. Ltd. In his lecture, Mr. Sandeep emphasized the need for Generative AI and Large Language Models, discussing their practical applications and potential impact.
  3. Additionally, ZS Associates conducted an internship drive for the students, resulting in two students being selected for positions.
  4. In the following session, Prof. Nibaran Das from Jadavpur University, who also serves as the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society, Kolkata Section, delivered a talk on "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning." He covered various areas where machine learning can be applied and explored different techniques within the field. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of establishing IEEE Student Branches and highlighted the membership benefits of the IEEE Computer Society.
  5. In the next session, Prof. Ram Sarkar from Jadavpur University gave a presentation on “Video Forgery.” He demonstrated various examples of video forgery and discussed how AI can be leveraged to prevent them. He also touched upon the topic of deepfakes, showcasing different AI-based models that can help detect them.
  6. A “Poster Presentation” session was also held, showcasing various innovations using AI. A total of seven posters were submitted, with three of them being presented during the program.

04/10/2024

  1. The day began with a talk by Mr. Abhinav Gambhir, Senior Architect at Microsoft and Lead of the IEEE CS SYP High Impact Zonal Event. He spoke about building scalable architectures for enterprises and highlighted how the increasing number of devices, along with advancements in AI, necessitates scalable solutions and effective load balancing. A group discussion was also conducted, focusing on various intelligent solutions for addressing scalability in real-world problems.
  2. A hands-on session on Python programming was conducted by Mrs. Tamanna Tamanna, Associate of Business Intelligence and Data Informatics at Ciena. She demonstrated how Python can be applied to solve various real-life problems.
  3. The next session was delivered by Prof. Jyotsna Kumar Mondal from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Kalyani, who is also the former Vice-Chancellor of Raigang University. He discussed the Intelligent Assessment Framework for Technology-Enabled Learning, emphasizing how AI can be utilized to evaluate descriptive answers.
  4. The final session was delivered by Prof. Diptendu Sinha Roy from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya. He discussed the application of generative AI in 5G communication traffic, presenting various generative AI techniques that can be employed to reduce traffic in 5G networks.

The event concluded with a valedictory session chaired by Prof. J.K. Mandal. The Registrar of North-Eastern Hill University Col. Omkar Singh(Retd.)was also present as the Guest of Honour. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the Poster Presentation.
