An expert session on the pressing issue of substance use was organized at the NEHU-Shillong campus, where Mr. Dikshant Sharma, a nationally recognized Youth Empowerment Leader and government-certified DDR Field Expert under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, was invited (online) as the resource person and subject Expert.
The session was conducted in the presence of the proctor of the university (as Nodal Officer of university for Nasha Mukt Bharat Aabhiyan, NMBA) Dr Phrangstone Khongji and Co-nodal officer, Dr Chandrakanta, who actively participated in the proceedings. The warden of hostel Dr. Rumi Rajbongshi and Prof. Marappan Velusamy also graced the occasion by their presence and made the session interactive. The programmed was also attended by few representatives of the NEHU-student’s union along with the volunteers (Mr Bala Jee- Law Department, Mr Nitesh- CCS Department, Mr Divyanshu Kumar- Biomedical engineering Department, Mr Shashikanth S- Biomedical engineering department, Mr Aditya- IT Department) of the NMBA. The discussion highlighted the grave impact of substance abuse on individuals as well as on society at large, with particular emphasis on preventive and remedial measures in the context of hostel life.
Mr. Sharma (speaker) elaborated on practical strategies to tackle the problem, ranging from awareness-building and counseling to skill development and community interventions. The dialogue emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in addressing this social concern and in fostering a safe and supportive environment for students.
The training proved to be highly informative, creating awareness among participants and reinforcing the University’s commitment to promoting a healthy and drug-free campus culture.
