Guest lecture on Genetically Modified Crops and Food (GM & GMO Organisms)

A lecture on the topic “Genetically Modified Crops and Food (GM & GMO Organisms)” has been delivered by Dr. Shruti Shukla- Associate Professor, Department of Nanotechnology, NEHU- Shillong. The lecture was organized by Dr. Chandrakanta- Faculty, Department of Geography (NEHU-Shillong). Special thanks to the Head- Prof PK Ryngnga- Department of Geography (NEHU) for understanding the need of the students and extending all her support to organise this lecture.

The invited guest lecture was focused on the history, and application of Genetically Modified (GM) technology in crops and food production. Dr. Shukla explained how genetic modification involves altering the genetic makeup of organisms to introduce desirable traits such as pest resistance, herbicide tolerance, and improved nutritional content. The discussion also focused on advantages of GM crops, such as higher yield, pest and disease resistance, and better food quality. Additionally, Dr. Shukla explained the development of Bt Cotton, the first GM crop approved in India in 2002, and described the step-by-step process of developing a GMO plant. Lastly, Dr. Shukla explained the disadvantages and way forward for genetically modified (GM) foods. She mentioned that GM foods may cause allergic reactions, may affect human health, and can create environmental concerns if not properly regulated. Therefore, she emphasized the need for strict testing, safety approval, and responsible use of GM technology. She concluded by encouraging further research and awareness to ensure that GM crops are used safely for the benefit of farmers and consumers.

Special thanks to all the students’ volunteers (Department of Geography-NEHU) for their coordination and cooperation throughout the event.
