A one-day educational trip to ICAR (NEH) Region was organized by Department of Geography, NEHU under the supervision of Dr. Chandrakanta (visit in-charge). Special thanks to the Head- Prof PK Ryngnga, Department of Geography (NEHU) for understanding the need of the students and encouraging the students for this educational visit.
Upon reaching the campus, team was warmly welcomed by Mr. Swaroop Sharma, technical officer (Chief executive) who accompanied us to agricultural engineering unit where students could see demonstration of small agriculture tools which are specially designed for hill regions (such as root crop washer, paddy windmill, fruit harvester, pesticide sprayer, dibbler and many more tools). In the same section, Dr. Avindan Nag, senior scientist-ICAR delivered a lecture on diffusion process of agriculture technology which consists of innovation, communication channels, time and social systems.
In another section students could see organic farming of mustard, multiple cropping with different crops combination such as rajma, beans, millet etc and faming of papayas, different types of cabbage, cauliflower, chilies and brinjal etc. They rear cows and goats; they even rear pigs also and prepare good quality vermi-compost by cow dung.
Poultry section was very interesting where they have variety of hybrid chicken which they sell to the farmers in very low prices. Next, students were taken to horticulture section where they grow different types of guava, peaches, dragon fruits, oranges etc and multiple verities of each species.
The students visited another centre which is under ICAR-“National bureau of plant genetic resources”, where the experts gave lecture on the genetic plants and how the seeds are explored and conserved by them at regional and national level.
The visit to ICAR, Umiam was extremely informative and motivating. It provided exposure to various agricultural laboratories, instruments, and scientific techniques. Students gained insights into poultry, organic farming, grafting, and sustainable agricultural practices. The visit not only enriched academic understanding but also deepened their interest in exploring agricultural research in the future.
Thanks to transport office NEHU for arranging bus for the visit and special thanks to all the students’ volunteers (Department of Geography-NEHU) who have been helpful throughout the visit.
