A Tree/Fruit Plantation Drive 2026–2036 was organised at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, on 27 August 2026, under the theme “Plant a Tree, Grow an Olympic Legacy.” The programme was organised jointly by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
The plantation drive was conducted in support of the Indian Olympic Association’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games and sought to connect the spirit of sporting excellence with environmental responsibility. The initiative promoted the message “One Athlete • One Student • One Tree”, encouraging young people and the wider community to contribute towards a greener and more sustainable future.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, and staff members of NEHU, who came together to plant trees and fruit-bearing saplings within the University campus. The collective participation reflected the University community’s commitment to environmental conservation, sustainable development, and the creation of a greener campus.
The plantation drive also highlighted the importance of involving students and youth in environmental initiatives and nurturing a sense of responsibility towards nature. By linking tree plantation with the Olympic vision, the programme conveyed the message that a lasting Olympic legacy should extend beyond sports infrastructure to include environmental sustainability and community participation.
The initiative concluded with a strong collective resolve to contribute towards a “Greener Meghalaya • Greener India • Towards Olympics 2036,” symbolising the shared aspiration of building a healthier environment and a sustainable legacy for future generations.
