World Tourism Day Celebrations in NEHU

The World Tourism Day which is observed worldwide on 27th September every year. The Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, North - Eastern Hill University, Shillong has organized series of events to revel World Tourism Day from September 26-28, 2019.  In his welcome address Dr. S. K. Dixit, Head of the Department asserted about the purpose of celebrating the World Tourism Day and its theme for 2019 i.e. Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all. A Panel discussion was organized on September 26, 2019 to deliberate this year’s UNWTO World Tourism Day theme. Mr. B.K. Sohliya, Director, Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship (MIE), Shillong; Mr. C.V.D Diengdoh, Director, Department of Tourism, Govt. of Meghalaya, Shillong; Prof. B. Panda, Dean School of Economic, Management Information Sciences, NEHU; Mr. P.S. Sehdave, President, Federation of Shillong Hotels; Mr. S.S. Barua, Research Officer, NEC, Shillong and Mr. E.B. Blah, President, North East India Tourism Confederation were invited in the Panel Discussion. In addition to this Tourism Quiz, Debate competition were also organized in which teams from different university departments and colleges took part. The team from North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homoeopathy, Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, Meghalaya won the Tourism Quiz whereas Miss Erenbeni Humtsoe from St. Anthony's College, Shillong won the Debate completion. The students also showcased the rich cultural tradition of the North – East India through their cultural performances.

On September 28, 2019 the students went for Eco - Tourism Awareness cum Cleaning Drive at the Laitlum Canyons (Shillong). The purpose the entire celebration was to realistically involve people from cross-section of the society with the endeavor to create Tourism Awareness amongst the masses. The Department therefore intends to bring forth the potential of tourism in employment generation by having deliberations on this year’s theme i.e. Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’.
