    History

    The North-Eastern Hill University is a premier academic institution and the oldest central university in the North-Eastern region. The university has highly qualified faculty members recognised nationally and internationally through their quality of research and prestigious awards. Having acquired academic excellence over 52 years of its existence in more than 50 academic disciplines in the area of science, technology, social science, humanities and languages, the university started the MBA programme as one of the professional courses under the School of Economics, Management and Information Science (SEMIS) at Tura Campus in 2006. Subsequently, the department started the MBA Service Management programme in 2012.  The department has drawn students from different parts of the country as well as from other foreign countries in the past for all the courses offered by the department.

    Profile

    The Department of Management was established with an objective to provide the students with an appropriate combination of conceptual framework and practical insight into managerial challenges and business opportunities for grooming entrepreneurial initiatives. Its unique feature of Financial Autonomy has been facilitating to make synergy with Doyens of Management and professionals across the Premier Institutions to bring an integrated approach from International, National and Regional perspectives. The department is well equipped with modern technologies and equipment such as Smart interactive boards in the classroom, fully air-conditioned classrooms, CCTV cameras and installed projectors in various conferences and committee rooms along with hi-speed WiFi facility. The department offers two MBA courses; MBA-General Management and MBA-Services Management, PhD programme and a Certificate Course in Entrepreneurship & Startups.  Both MBA courses offer dual specialisations with the students have the choice of choosing two specialisation papers in 3rd and 4th Semesters. Both MBA programmes are full-time courses as per NEP 2020, and is based on exhaustive course curriculum, regular industrial visits, winter internship, dissertation, regular interaction with industry experts and visits to rural enterprises for exposure to Indigenous knowledge and systems. Our unique learning methodology includes learning case studies, rural immersion programme, group discussions, debates, seminars, business games, role plays, self-managing team, and venture creation projects. The department has strength of 13 sanction posts of faculties. The faculties are drawn from different parts of the country who are highly experienced and have both national and international exposures. The department has the repository of required titles (several of them multiple copies), journals and magazines in the central library of NEHU Tura campus. Besides, it has its own hi speed WiFi connection for students and faculty for updating their knowledge at par with their contemporaries across the globe.

    Placements

    The department has a strong industry-academia network with various reputed companies across the country and abroad. A placement committee consisting of students with teacher co-coordinator is constituted to look after winter project placement and final placement for the students. The department has successfully placed the students in reputed companies besides engagement in academics, university systems, banking services and civil services, etc.

    Structure of the programmes

    MBA Programmes

    There is a total of four semesters in the MBA programme. The duration for the first and third semesters is from August to December, and for the second and fourth semesters is from February to July. There will be a total of 30 papers comprising 20 core papers and 10 elective papers (with a total of 100 credits). In addition to this, there will be Rural Immersion and Industrial Tour equivalent to (2+2=4 credits), Summer Internship equivalent to 4 Credits and a Dissertation including a Comprehensive viva-voce of (8+4=12 Credits). The total credits will be 120 credits over 4 semesters/2 years. One (1) credit is equivalent to 25 marks, carrying a total of 3000 marks.

    MBA General Management Programme

    For MBA-General Management, in addition to the core papers, the specialisation papers are offered in five functional areas of management:

    • Marketing Management
    • Human Resource Management
    • Agri-Business Management
    • Financial Management
    • Business Analytics

    The students need to choose any two specialisation group papers from the list of functional areas in the 3rd and 4th semesters as specialisation papers.

    MBA Service Management Programme

    Similarly, for MBA-Services Management, besides the specialisation group papers offered in functional areas of the general management course, the specialisation papers are also provided in the following sectoral areas of management:

    • Tourism Management
    • NGO Management
    • Banking and Insurance
    • Agri-Business Management
    • Business Analytics

    The students need to choose one specialisation from the list of functional areas of MBA-General Management, and another from the list of sectoral areas in the 3rd and 4th semesters as specialisation group papers.

    PhD Programme

    The PhD programme offered by the department is full-time regular programme. After admission, the scholar needs to undertake a compulsory Pre-PhD Course work for six months and clear the Course work examination. The duration of the programme is up to a maximum period of 6 (six) years.

    Certificate Course in Entrepreneurship & Startups

    The certificate course intends to develop skills of the youth for the establishment of start-ups in their field of their interest to generate employment opportunities for the unemployed youths. The certificate course on Entrepreneurship and Start-Ups is of a six-month duration for the class XII passed students. The course is mostly practical-based with a focus on skill development and industry/exposure visits.
