    About the Department

    History

    The Department of Rural development and Agricultural Production was started in 2002 with an initial intake of ten students from science background. The present level of intake in the department is 20. Being multidisciplinary in nature the department undertakes both teaching and research in the areas concerning rural development, agronomy, horticulture and animal science. The department provides both theoretical and practical exposure to M. Sc (RDAP) students in various areas relating to the multidisciplinary P.G. programme within the stipulated time. In addition to this, the department has organized various seminars, workshops, talks, demonstrations, consultancy and evaluation services for promoting entrepreneurship in the fields of dairy, poultry, piggery, fishery, vermin-compost, floriculture, mushroom cultivation, etc.. The department is also actively engaged in the research activities pertaining to different issue in rural and social development, horticulture, agronomy, livestock management, environment and life sciences, bio-technology and food security, local governance etc.

    Profile

    The department at present has seven faculty members against the sanctioned strength of nine faculty members, two senior technical assistant and five technical assistants. The department has also developed one demonstration farm consisting of livestock unit, horticulture unit and agronomy unit, besides having a Vermi-compost unit, Net House & Poly House, etc..  Four laboratories for horticulture, agronomy, soil science and animal sciences are also part of the demonstration farm.

    Thrust Areas

    The department mainly concentrates on multi-disciplinary research in the areas of rural development, agronomy, horticulture and animal science.

    Achievements

    One of the most significant achievements of the Department has been the “Students Outreach Programme” under which the students of the department make regular visits to villages and perform as NGOs resource persons, thus, initiating direct interaction with the village community. The department has also initiated action research project for training the rural youth on computer related skills. The department is also actively engaged in the research activities pertaining to different issue in rural and social development, horticulture, agronomy, livestock management, environment and life sciences, bio-technology and food security, local governance etc. The Department since its inception has developed professional collaboration with NIRD, Regional centre, Guwahati and NIRD, Headquarters, Hyderabad, CAPART& IAMR, New Delhi, SIRD, Guwahati, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Barapani for practical exposure and improvement of rural development programmes for improvement of techniques relating to Rural Development and Agricultural Production. The Department also offers placement to the students.
