    About the Department

    The Department of Law, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong was established in 2005. Over the past one decade the Department has made significant progress in terms of restructuring courses and syllabi, introducing new course, experimenting with innovative techniques of imparting legal education and strengthening its Clinical Programme in order to give due emphasis to the expanding horizon of legal profession. The Department of Law organises a national Moot Court Competition by the name NEHU National Moot Court Competition. The students of the Department also participate in different National and International Moot-Court Competitions organized by other Universities.

    The Department of Law recognizes the essential role of human creativity, intelligence and initiative in the construction of society and culture. It provides a healthy and respectful environment of free intellectual enquiry and exchange and the protection of freedom of thought. The Department is committed to improving the quality of teaching and learning in Legal Education.

    Ph.D. (Law)

    The Department has been offering the Ph.D Programme since 2015 in different areas of Law. The admission process for Ph.D starts in June/July each year. For admission to Ph.D, candidates are required to appear at an entrance test conducted by the Department.

    Master of Laws (LL.M)

    The Master’s Programme in Law (LL.M) was started from the session 2014-15. There are 10 seats for LL.M and the candidates seeking admission into the LL.M Programme must have secured 55% (for General candidates), 50% (for SC/ST candidates) aggregate marks in LL.B or equivalent grade points. The admission procedure includes an entrance test conducted by the Department.

    B.A.LL.B (Hons)

    There are 60 seats in the B.A.LL.B (Hons.) Programme. A candidate seeking admission into B.A.LL.B (Hons) Course is required to have passed the class XII examination in the 10+2 scheme or its equivalent in any discipline securing in the aggregate not less than 50% (General), 45% (SC/ST). The admission procedure includes an entrance test conducted by the Department.

    Law Library

    The Departmental Law Library has a collection of over 3500 documents including text books, reference books, law reports, online journals etc. The library supports the specific needs of the Law students and research scholars and Faculty members of the Department.

    Extracurricular activities

    The Department of Law aims at an overall development of the personality of the students by giving adequate attention to co-curricular and extracurricular activities besides classroom teaching, particularly with emphasis on moot-court, debates and extension lectures on legal issues.
