About the Department

Genesis and objectives

The Department of Architecture was established in the Shillong campus of N.E.H.U. under the School of Technology in 2013, funded by the M.H.R.D., Govt. of India. It was established with a strength of 3 core faculty members with a mission to impart Architectural education and lay a foundation for the budding professionals of the future. The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) programme started in 2014 after the Council of Architecture (M.H.R.D., Govt. of India) approved the Department and the programme with an initial intake of 40. This was the first Department established in a Central University in the country's North-East region.

Since then, the Department has been playing a pivotal role in nourishing the potential and developing the creative skill to produce budding Architects ready to serve society and contribute to shaping the planet responsibly and sustainably. The Department imparts a full-time five years Architectural curriculum comprising of ten semesters.

Vision & Mission 

The Department of Architecture at North-Eastern Hill University Shillong campus aims to impart Architectural education to the youths of our country and especially to the youths of the north-eastern states for pursuing a career in Architecture. The need to research, understand and study the context we live in is indeed essential, not just due to the topography of the hilly region being different from the plains, but also due to the study of various societies, cultural history, and being conscious of the stress on the ecosystem when we build, being prepared from natural disasters, future projections and sustainable alternatives to planning and development.
