Location Details:

Shillong, the capital city of the state of Meghalaya, is a hill station located at approximately 1500 m height above the mean sea level. The university campus is spread over 1024 acres of picturesque, gently undulating and thickly forested piece of land. Shillong has temperate climate and is a major tourist attraction in the north-eastern part of India, which is also one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots. The state of Meghalaya is full of natural lakes, reserve forests and waterfalls. Meghalaya as well as other states in the north-eastern part of India are also rich in social and cultural diversity and heritage.

Recognition:
NEHU has been re-accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) as an ‘A’ grade university in 2009. NEHU has also been adjudged as a ‘University with Potential for Excellence’ in 2006 by the University Grants Commission making it one of the top few universities in India.

Programs of Study:
Limited number of seats is offered each year to foreign students in different programmes of study. Offer of admission is the discretion of the concerned department/centre, although it is vetted by the Overseas Students’ Admission Committee.

Post-graduation (PG) Level:
    • Master’s degree (M. A., M. Sc., M. Com., M. Lib. & M. B. A.) (4-semester programme), M. Phil. degree (3 semester programme) and Ph. D. degree (average 6-12 semester programme) are offered in Anthropology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Education, English, Environmental Studies, Garo*, Geography, Hindi, History, Khasi, Library & Information Science, Linguistics, Management* Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Plant Molecular Biology, Political Science, Rural Development & Agricultural Production*, Sociology, Statistics and Zoology at Shillong campus except programmes marked with ‘*’, which are offered only at Tura campus of NEHU. Some departments offer only Master’s degree programme. The Department of Education also offers a two semester programme called M. Ed.
    • Certificate & Diploma degrees (1 & 2 semesters programmes) are offered in Adult Education, Applied Statistics, Computer Application, Disaster Management, Environmental Studies, Folkloristics, Music, NGO Management, Painting, etc.
    • Note: A semester is of 6-month duration and one academic year comprises 2 semesters.

    Professional Under-graduation (P-UG) Programme:
    • Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) (4-year programme) in Information Technology (IT) and Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) and Bachelor of Law (B. A., LL. B.) (5-year integrated programme) programmes are offered at Shillong campus. 
    • In addition, professional as well as non-professional UG degree programmes in sciences, arts, humanities, management and engineering disciplines are offered by colleges affiliated to NEHU. Currently, over 54 colleges are affiliated to NEHU. Admission to these programmes, fee structures and other aspects are independently administered by the colleges offering the programmes. Eligibility:
Bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject from a recognized university is required for admission to M. A./M. Sc./M. B. A. programmes and Master’s degree in the relevant or related subject from a recognized university for admission to M. Phil./Ph. D. programmes. For admission to professional as well as non-professional undergraduate (UG) programmes, the applicant must have passed senior high school (grade 12) examination. The applicant must have a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying examination. In addition, at the time of admission, a valid student’s visa and health certification from the country of origin will be needed.
   
Other Information About the University:
This university was established in 1973 by an Act of Parliament and is funded by Government of India. The university regularly produces a substantial body of first rate research material in areas of life sciences, physical sciences, environmental sciences, biodiversity, understanding indigenous cultures and their historical and anthropological aspects, linguistic and philosophical links, etc. through 29 PG & 3 P-UG Departments, 2 Centres of Studies, 2 Service Centers, 1 Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility and 1 Biodiversity Cell. Each Department/ Centre has highly qualified faculty with motivation for internationally competitive high quality research. Several faculty members have foreign collaboration in research.

Infrastructure facilities:
NEHU has well equipped teaching class rooms, research labs, Central Instrumentation Facilities, Sophisticated & Analytical Instrumentation Centre, and a Central Library. The campus has its own Voice & Data Network, which connects all sections of the university with high speed link giving internet access across the campus via 1 Gbps NKN link. All labs have internet connections. NEHU has its own digital on-line library with access to over 3,500 online scholarly journals through NKN. Many departments have, in addition, smaller departmental libraries and other specialized facility for teaching and research.

Accomodation:
The university offers high-quality single room furnished apartments with an attached bathroom and kitchenette to foreign students on the campus. Internet access is provided in each room. The accommodation is limited and is offered on first-come-first-served basis. No married student’s accommodation is offered by NEHU.
   
Other Amenities:
University buses for transport, bank with ATMs, post office, departmental store, shopping complex, cafeterias, guest houses, in-door and out-door sport facilities, gymnasia, health center, etc. are available on the campus.

Co-curricular activities:
Sports, debates, outings, cultural and other functions and various activities under National Service Scheme are available for students.

Student Support Services:
Admission of foreign students is done by a Central Admission Committee through the Dean, Student’s Welfare. Once admitted to a study program, all foreign students are bound by the ordinances/regulations and rules of the university applicable to all students of the university. These are also available on the web site of the university (http://www.nehu.ac.in). They are under general administrative control of the Head of the concerned department and research supervisor.
   
Fees and Other Charges:
The tuition, hostel and other fees applicable to foreign students are shown below for the academic year 2012-13. Unless changed by the university, the same fee structure shall continue for the following years. Please contact Dean, Student’s Welfare for further information. The fees shown below are for one academic year (2 semesters) except for hostels, which are shown on monthly basis.
