NEHU celebrates 73^rd Republic Day

The 73rd Republic Day of India was celebrated on the 26th January 2022 in the premises of NEHU. The event commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Prof. P. S. Shukla, Honble' Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, followed by singing of the Indian National Anthem. In his Address, The Vice Chancellor highlighted the effort of the freedom fighters in adoption to the Indian Constitution in commemorating the 75 years of freedom struggle. The Vice-Chancellor addressed Dr BR Ambedkarâ??s immense contribution to the Indian Constitution. He highlighted the effort of Freedom Struggle and Commemorated 75 years of freedom struggle. In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor also spoke about beauty of Meghalaya and contribution of its people in the struggle for freedom.

The Vice-Chancellor also recalled how North-Eastern Hill University was established in 1973 with Smt. Indira Gandhi serving as the first Chancellor of University. In 49 years of its existence, NEHU has retained its position in fields of Higher education and research. He also recognized and acknowledged the hard work and contribution of Teachers, Students and Scholar which has taken the name of the university and state to higher echelons. The Vice-Chancellor also congratulated Prof. Badaplin War, Department of Khasi Language and Literature, NEHU, who had been awarded Padma Shri by the President of India on the eve of the Republic Day for her contribution in the fields of literature and education. She is the lone recipient of the Award from Meghalaya.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized on how the university fraternity has to work even harder to maintain respect and honour of the University and the need to make NEHU one of the best campuses in the country. He also proposed for setting up Dr. Ambedkar Centre of excellence for training SC/ST students for UPSC Coaching in association with the Govt. of Meghalaya and Govt. of India. He also addressed the proposals of setting up a task force with the Govt of Meghalaya for the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, and highlighted the importance of the NEP 2020 for students to build up their knowledge and skills for the future.

The Vice-Chancellor was pleased to announce that NEHU will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee and how five decades of NEHUâ??s legacy of achievements has contributed in its growth. He invited everyone to join hands in turning to the future as we celebrate the past and imagine next 50 years in order to capture the magnificent moments and outstanding achievements of the University. The Vice-Chancellor brought to everyoneâ??s notice that the University is also planning to bring out a compendium of achievements highlights celebrating 5 decades of NEHU.

In closing speech VC emphasised in working together in making NEHU a leading University in the Entire North east, a hub for successful start-ups creating innovative products and business model using the IPR knowledge and technologies developed by the university, a world class ecosystem for collaborative research with industries. Awards will be given for best officers, teachers and students etc. A model University Campus, Digital Campus, clean and Green Campus initiative with all the constituent unit of the university in terms of sustainable development and recycling of material resources will be initiated. He also emphasized on building a strong alumni network which will benefit both the university and the students. He mentioned that we are in a new stage of nation building process where we have to embark and drive inspiration from both our republican values and ancient Indian ethos and to take up the university to the next level; in terms of research and development and international collaboration.

VC concluded by wishing everyone present A happy Republic Day.

The Republic day celebrations included various stakeholders of the University and there was a visible gaiety and jubilation at the congenial and harmonious ambience of the University under the able leadership of Prof. P.S. Shukla, the incumbent Vice Chancellor. Students, teachers and non-teaching employees exuded confidence in new directions that the VC outlined in his speech, much of which has been a report card of progress and growth of the University in last six to seven months.
