Har Ghar Tiranga March organized at NEHU, Shillong

North-Eastern Hill University , Shillong today organized a Har Ghar Tiranga March in its campus as part of Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan to commemorate 75th anniversary of Independence. The Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla flagged off the March starting from the Department of Law to Multi-Use Convention Hall of NEHU. The march also saw the participation of CRPF jawans who were joined by the DIG, CRPF. The event also showcased the rich culture and heritage of North-Eastern India where the students donned the costumes of all eight north-eastern states. The event saw the participation of more than 1000 students, teachers and staffs of NEHU.

After the march, the students, teachers and staffs assembled at Multi-Use Convention Centre where a Har  Ghar Tigaranga Program was continued. Dr. Lajja Ram Bishnoi, Director General of Police, Meghalaya graced the occasion as the chief Guest and Shri. Stalward Lyngskhor, Sordar of Sohbar Sirdarship was present as the guest of Honour.

Dr. Bishnoi in his speech elaborated the importance of Amrit Mahotsav and why it is relevant in the present time to enlighten the youth to be more patriotic. He also mentioned about the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who gave their lives for our freedom. He particularly mentioned the freedom fighters from North-East India, like U Tirot Singh Syiem who have contributed to the freedom struggle. Dr. Bishnoi further emphasized on the role youth play in building the nation and makes it grow but the menace of drug abuse is diverting our youth to a very dangerous road.

Shri. Stalward Lyngskhor, Sordar of Sohbar Sirdarship in speech gave a detailed knowledge about the Sohbar Sirdarship. He spoke about how the capital city of Shillong was to be linked to modern day Bangladesh via railways. He also gave a detailed picture of the culture, heritage and the picturesque sites of the Sohbar Sirdarship. While mentioning about the role of Sohbar Sirdarship, he also spoke about the lesser known places and villages in Sohbar Sirdarship which were the sites of resistance against the British Imperialism.

The Vice- Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla in speech emphasized on the role played by the freedom fighters from the north-eastern region. While speaking about the contribution of the north-east india in struggle for freedom the Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the struggle for independence started in the year 1857 with the freedom fighters and revolutionaries fighting against the Britishers all over the country, sacrificing their lives for us, however, as the citizens of North-East India, how many of us know about the sacrifices of the freedom fighters from this part of the country. He mentioned that our very own hero “U Tirot Sing Syiem” is one such unsung Hero whose name we rarely find in the history books of Freedom Struggle. Same can be said about U Kiang Nang Bah from the Jaintia Hills and Patogan Sangma from the Garo Hills. The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned about the contributions made by the freedom fighters from other parts of North-East India like Gomdhar Konwar, Maniram Dewan, Madhu Malik, Urbidhar Barua, Mahidhar Sarma, Madhuram Koch of Assam, Maharaj Kulchandra,  Tikendrajit of Manipur , The Angamis Nagas and the Lushais of Mizoram as well. Complementing the Chief Guest, he also stressed on the importance of sensitizing the youth about the importance of staying away from the drugs.

As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, a photo exhibition was also held in the same premises. The exhibition featured the villages of Sohbar in South Khasi Hills which were a places of resistance to British imperialism.
