A formal send off function was held on 27th January 2020 in the Conference Hall of the Vice-Chancellor for 22 of the NEHU students visiting Japan under the IRIS programme. The students will be visiting Japan from 1-8th February 2020. IRIS is a programme initiated by the Japan government to invite talented young people from the North-eastern part of India. In Japan, the Students are scheduled to visit the Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park, Tokyo Hydrogen Museum (Tokyo Suiso-miru), International Volunteer University Student Association (IVUSA), Panasonic Center Tokyo, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation and Tokyo Environmental Public Service Corporation. They are also to attend a lecture on Atomic Bomb survivors and interact with Indian Embassy officials in Tokyo.
Welcoming and congratulating the selected students, Prof. S.K. Srivastava, Vice-Chancellor, NEHU mentioned that students are cultural ambassadors of our country to Japan and they also showcase NEHU brand. He also reminded the students that this occasion marks the coming together of two great nations as there is good chemistry between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe. Prof. H. Lamin, Pro-VC, NEHU while congratulating the selected students, mentioned that this is a great opportunity for them and they should make full use of it. He also thanked the Japanese embassy in India for providing this wonderful opportunity to the students of NEHU. Prof. Bhagirathi Panda, DEAN, School of Economics, Management and Information Sciences informed the gathering about the importance of the tour for the University and the region in the backdrop of the Central Government’s Act East Policy. Prof. Streamlet Dkhar, Dean, School of Humanities wished the students a safe journey and advised them to be careful of their hygiene in view of the outbreak of Coranavirus in China.
