    About the Department

    The Department of Horticulture was established in the year 2012 under the School of Human and Environmental Sciences. It has grown into a full-fledged department with facilities for specialization in Fruit Science/Vegetable Science/Floriculture and Landscaping. At present, department is having 10-12ha of land under Horticultural Research Farm and likely to expand in future. Also, department has four laboratories with sophisticated and modern equipment for facilitating the research programme at par with national and international levels.

    Aims and Objectives

    Since its inception, the department has been actively involved in teaching, research and extension activities relating to the fields of Horticultural production, Breeding, Protected cultivation, Post-Harvest Technologies, Biotechnology, Exploration, Conservations of germplasms, etc.  During the XII Plan, the department’s goal is to create an academic, research and extension environment in a holistic manner. The major objectives under the department are as follows:

    1. To promote and develop integrative thinking for consolidating horticultural teaching, research, extension,
    2. To train and create expertise in identified thrust areas,
    3. To contribute for the betterment and well-being of society
    4. To develop partnership and collaboration locally, nationally and internationally, and
    5. To build world-class infrastructure facilities.

    Major Thrust Areas

    The utmost priority of the Department is to impart knowledge and Education related to Horticulture and allied branches and to serve as a centre for academic excellence in Horticulture. The department mainly concentrates on multi-disciplinary research and extension works with an aim to improve the aspects of Hill Horticultural System and develop technical manpower in North-Eastern regions and Meghalaya state in particular. Further, the thrust areas lies on conservation of genetic biodiversity, sustainable green farming and to adapt in the climate change scenario. An establishment of an infrastructure including well-equipped laboratories and an operational research management system is necessary which will ensure quick, efficient and cost effective implementation of research programmes.
